How students transitioned into medical writing with confidence

Background & obstacle

Crystal, a Canadian pharmacist specializing in care plans, recently started an aesthetics practice but faced industry uncertainties. While creating content for her website, she discovered a passion for writing and became interested in medical writing. However, she had no experience with cover letters, a nearly empty LinkedIn, and found networking challenging. She wanted a structured 9–5 career with research and writing but wasn’t sure how to break in.

MWCL helped Crystal refine her resume and create a compelling cover letter that highlighted her transferable skills. With a strong application, she impressed hiring managers and landed a role at a medical communications agency. Now, she enjoys diverse projects and the flexibility of her new career.

Aseel, MBBS

Landed A full-time job as A Medical Writer in a Regional CRO

Background & obstacle

Aseel, a medical graduate based in Egypt, wanted to transition into medical writing but wasn’t sure where to start. She had a strong background in research and translation but lacked experience beyond academic papers. She was applying to jobs regularly but wasn’t getting responses. Her goal was to find a stable, full-time role in medical education to gain experience while working toward a future career in neurology.

MWCL gave Aseel the clarity she needed. She refined her resume and cover letter—leading to her first job—and learned how to network effectively. The course introduced her to informational interviews and the power of professional connections, setting her career in motion. Though she initially aimed for medical education writing, she landed in regulatory writing and now works full-time at a regional CRO. She loves the steep learning curve and is building a career that funds her future goals—growing every day in the right direction.

How the program helped

"I was so lost on what to do. Before Lindsay's insights, I used to apply for 10+ jobs weekly and received no response. But after using her template, I got THE response that ended up being my current job."

"I currently write and analyze medical research projects. I write manuscripts, design research methodology and validate results. I like the steep learning curve, it has been a year now but every day I know I am learning something new, I value transferable skills and a growing career the most at this stage, and that is what gets me up in the morning to open my laptop and start working."

Background & obstacle

An assistant professor in neuroscience in the US, she found herself losing interest in academia and drawn to medical writing for its variety and constant learning opportunities. She wanted a smooth transition to a stable, remote role. Though she had experience in academic and regulatory writing, she was not familiar with the wider field of medical writing, wasn't getting the responses she had hoped for, and wasn’t sure how to break into the field.

MWCL provided structure and clarity on how to reposition her skills for industry roles. The resume and cover letter guidance helped her present her experience in a way that resonated with hiring managers. She also used MWCL’s community and networking strategies to refine her approach. With this support, she landed a fully remote regulatory writing position at a pharmaceutical company with excellent pay—exactly what she was looking for.

"Lindsay was so helpful and supportive during my job search, and has continued to offer assistance even after I got an offer. From the classes that offered advice on structuring my resume to the help she provided navigating my first position, I can't recommend her enough."

Nicolas, PhD

Landed A 3-month paid medical writing internshiP

Background & obstacle

Nicolas, an American teacher with a PhD in biology, wanted to transition into medical writing but faced challenges due to his lack of direct industry experience. While he had a strong scientific background, he wasn’t familiar with medical writing terminology or the different types of deliverables used in the field. As a result, he struggled to position himself effectively in job applications and interviews. After months of applying and receiving rejections, he needed a clearer strategy to break into the industry.

MWCL gave Nicolas a strong foundation in medical writing by helping him understand industry terminology, different types of writing deliverables, and how to present himself as a qualified candidate. By using the right language in interviews, he was able to leave a stronger impression on hiring managers. He was encouraged to follow up with interviewers, which proved crucial—one of his interview connections recommended that he apply for a paid internship, which he successfully secured.

How the program helped

"I am relieved that I am making progress towards achieving my goal, after months upon months of applying for jobs and being rejected due to a lack of experience. Even if the internship does not lead to a full-time position with this company, it will give me experience that I can use to find other full-time positions."

"Where the course was most helpful was educating me on the terminology and the different types of medical writing. I found that using the terminology in interviews and demonstrating that I know about the different types of medical writing deliverables in interviews significantly boosted the opinion that interviewers had of me."

Amrutha, PhD

Landed a 3-month medical writing internship

She wanted a career that would use her scientific knowledge and language skills while also providing personal and professional growth.

Through MWCL, Amrutha learned how to strategically approach her career transition. The course introduced her to the value of volunteering and internships as stepping stones into the industry, which helped her land an internship at a health tech company that specializes in screening and prevention.
